Mizusawa Castle Kuromon (Black Gate) Ruins are the preserved remains of a small Edo-period castle gate in the former castle town of Mizusawa, now part of Ōshū City in Iwate Prefecture, northern Japan.

Mizusawa itself was a modest castle base established in the early 17th century under the Sendai Domain, and its layout developed as a compact castle town surrounded by samurai residences rather than a large, heavily fortified mountain stronghold. The Kuromon, literally “Black Gate,” was one of the main entrances to the castle compound and served both as a defensive structure and a symbolic boundary between the lord’s inner area and the surrounding town.

Although the wooden gate no longer stands, the site preserves key features such as the stone and earthen foundations, the original gate location, and associated landscape elements that allow visitors to visualize the scale and arrangement of the castle’s entrance zone. Today the ruins are integrated into the local urban environment and cultural heritage of Ōshū, forming part of the broader historical atmosphere of Mizusawa’s former castle town, which also includes samurai houses, old streets, and nearby parks that reflect the area’s Edo-period past.
