Morecambe Bay
UK, United Kingdom
Morecambe Bay is a large, shallow bay of the Irish Sea that deeply indents the northwest coast of England between Barrow-in-Furness to the north and the seaside resorts of Morecambe and Heysham to the south, separating the Furness region of Cumbria from the rest of Lancashire.
It is one of the largest areas of intertidal flats in Britain, featuring the largest continuous area of seashore covered at high tide and uncovered at low tide in the whole of the UK, with golden sandy beaches, mudflats, sandflats, and salt marshes. The bay is a unique ecosystem at the confluence of four principal estuaries—the Leven, Kent, Lune, and Wyre—and hosts internationally important populations of waterfowl and seabirds including oystercatchers, waders, and seals, making it a protected Special Protection Area and Special Area of Conservation.
Popular for outdoor activities, the bay offers sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, powered paragliding, parachuting, mountain biking, and horseriding, plus guided walks across the dangerous sands with wide-open vistas toward the Lake District and Bowland Fells. The area supports over 400,000 people, includes coastal towns like Grange-over-Sands, Morecambe, and Heysham, and features long-distance walking and cycling routes including the Way of the Roses and Lancashire Coastal Way, while also serving as a popular holiday destination with amazing sunsets and classic seaside towns.
