Mormugão Fort, located on the southern tip of Goa at the mouth of the Zuari River near Vasco da Gama city, was constructed in 1624 by the Portuguese to defend the strategic Mormugao harbour and protect their maritime interests in the region.

Its imposing rectangular structure with strong bastions and thick walls once housed magazines, prison blocks, a chapel, and numerous cannons, reflecting classic Portuguese military architecture with some Maratha influences from a brief period of Maratha control.

The fort was envisioned as the possible capital for Portuguese India due to repeated threats from Maratha and Dutch forces, but this plan was abandoned because of practical challenges and high expenses.

Over the centuries, the fort fell into disrepair and now stands mostly as evocative ruins overlooking the Arabian Sea, offering visitors scenic views and glimpses into Goa’s turbulent colonial past, with remnants of its defensive features and traces of historic activity still evident today.​
