Verified Moti Daman Fort

Daman, India

Moti Daman Fort, built by the Portuguese between 1559 and 1581, is a large, robust fortification covering about 30,000 square meters in Daman, India.

It has thick stone walls with ten bastions and was strategically positioned overlooking the Arabian Sea and the Daman Ganga River. The fort complex includes significant structures such as the Church of Bom Jesus, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Church of Our Lady of Remedies, a lighthouse, government offices, the Dominican Monastery, and the poet Bocage’s house.

It functioned as the administrative center of Portuguese Daman for centuries and witnessed periods of conflict and colonial rule before becoming part of India in 1961. Although some areas are now in ruins, many buildings remain intact and are used for administrative purposes, while visitors can explore its historic architecture and enjoy the panoramic views from the fort walls.

The fort reflects Portuguese colonial military architecture mixed with local influences, making it an important cultural and historical landmark in Daman.
