Mysore Zoo, officially known as Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, was established in 1892 by Maharaja Chamaraja Wadiyar X of Mysore.

Originally a private menagerie within the Summer Palace grounds, it started with about 10 acres and expanded over the next decade to 45 acres, featuring spacious enclosures designed with modern naturalistic concepts. The zoo is acclaimed for its meticulous planning, emphasis on animal welfare, and conservation breeding of endangered species.

It houses approximately 1,450 animals across 168 species of birds and various other wildlife from around the world. The grounds also include a bandstand, an artificial lake, and extensive landscaped gardens, creating a scenic and educational environment. Since its inception, the zoo has expanded to roughly 155 acres with the acquisition of additional land and facilities, including Karanji Lake, and is managed by the Zoo Authority of Karnataka.

It serves as a popular tourist destination, blending historical legacy with contemporary conservation and educational efforts.​
