Verified Nagaokajō Honmaru-ato monument

Nagaoka, Japan, Japan

The Nagaokajō Honmaru‑ato monument is a small stone memorial in Nagaoka, Niigata, that marks the location of the honmaru (main citadel) of the former Nagaoka Castle, which no longer has any physical structures remaining.

Built in 1616 as a flatland castle for the Hori and later Makino clans, the castle played a notable role in the Boshin War of 1868–69, when it was heavily damaged and burned during fighting between imperial and alliance forces, leaving almost nothing of the original site. After the castle’s destruction, the area was gradually developed into a town and, from 1898 onward, became the site of Nagaoka Station, so today the honmaru ruins lie beneath or near the station’s plaza and surrounding urban buildings.

The monument itself is a simple stone marker, sometimes accompanied by a short explanatory plaque, situated near the station’s front rotunda or fountain area, serving as the only visible reminder that this busy transit hub was once the heart of a major Edo-period castle. For visitors, it is essentially a historical footnote rather than a large park or museum: you can stop briefly to read the inscription and imagine the former castle layout, while more detailed exhibits and a reconstructed “mock” tower are located in a separate park and local museum some distance away from the station.
