Nagarjunakonda
Andhra Pradesh, India
Nagarjunakonda in Andhra Pradesh is a historic town renowned for its rich Buddhist heritage and archaeological significance.
Once an important cultural and religious center, it was the site of a major Buddhist monastic university that attracted students from distant regions such as China, Gandhara, Bengal, and Sri Lanka around the 3rd to 4th centuries CE. The town, which was originally called Vijayapuri, was also the capital of the Ikshvaku kingdom, with rulers who built various Hindu temples alongside Buddhist monuments.
Due to the construction of the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, much of the ancient site was submerged, and many relics were moved to a nearby island where a museum now houses sculptures, inscriptions, and artifacts from the area’s Buddhist and Hindu past. The site is named after the Buddhist philosopher Nagarjuna, who is linked to the development of Mahayana Buddhism and is believed to have taught here.
Today, Nagarjunakonda remains a vital archaeological and tourist site reflecting the spiritual and historical richness of southern India.
