Originally established as a mud fort in the 4th century AD by the Naga rulers, it was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century and significantly expanded over time by various Rajput and Mughal rulers. The fort combines Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, featuring massive walls, seven successive gates, 28 towering bastions, intricate carved stone jalis, and beautifully ornamented palaces and temples within its precincts.

It is renowned for an elaborate water system with tanks, fountains, and rainwater harvesting that ensured comfort amid the arid environment. Key structures include the ornately decorated Abha Mahal, with frescoes, paintings, and a natural cooling wind chimney, and the Sheesh Mahal, known for its glass and mirror work.
