Verified Nagayama Castle

Hita, Japan, Japan

Nagayama Castle in Hita, Oita Prefecture, is the remains of a small early Edo-period hilltop castle built on Mount Nagayama in what is now Maruyama-chō, Hita, and today the site is maintained as Tsukikuma Park rather than as a large tourist castle complex.

Constructed around 1605–1606 by the local daimyō Makino clan, who ruled the nearby Hita area as part of the larger Bungo domain structure, the castle served mainly as a local stronghold and administrative base rather than a major regional seat, and its structures were dismantled in the early 1870s after the Meiji Restoration abolished the feudal system.

Very little of the original architecture survives today; instead, visitors see the castle’s earthen walls, terraces, and remnants of stone walls that follow the natural contours of the hill, along with a few modern interpretive signs that explain the layout and history of the site. The park is accessible by a short walk from central Hita and is known locally for its quiet, wooded setting and views over the surrounding hills and the Hita Basin.

Making it a modest, undeveloped historical spot rather than a large monument or museum, and it is sometimes listed among smaller, lesser-known castle ruins in the Oita region that are valued for their natural setting and local historical significance rather than for reconstructed buildings or elaborate visitor facilities.
