Nago Castle Ruins (Nago Gusuku) in Nago, Okinawa, are the remains of a 14th-century Ryukyuan gusuku – a hilltop “earth castle” built mainly of soil, terraces, and moats rather than stone walls – that served as the residence of the local Lord of Nago (Nago Aji) and was a key stronghold in the northern part of the island before the unification of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

In 1416, the castle was captured by the army of Chūzan during the invasion of Hokuzan, and by the Edo period its structures had largely disappeared, leaving only traces of defensive lines and earthworks that can still be seen on the hill today. The entire site has been developed as Nago Castle Park, a spacious, family-friendly area with hiking trails, ponds, playgrounds, shrines, an information center, and a high observation tower that offers panoramic views of Nago Bay and the surrounding hills.

The park is especially famous as one of Japan’s earliest cherry blossom spots, with about 3,800 Ryūkyū winter cherry (Ryūkyū kanhizakura) trees that bloom from late January to early February and draw visitors for the annual Nago Cherry Blossom Festival. Visitors can reach the park by car from Naha (roughly 90 minutes) or by bus to the “Nago Castle Entrance,” then walk about five minutes, and the climb to the summit takes about 15–20 minutes on a gentle, well-maintained path, making it a straightforward combination of historical ruins, nature, and scenic views rather than a large reconstructed monument or museum.
