Nakijin Castle Ruins (Nakijin-gusuku) in Nakijin, Okinawa, are the remains of a large 13th–14th-century gusuku, a type of Ryukyuan fortress built primarily of unprocessed limestone walls rather than stone masonry, and they are one of the eleven “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu” that together form Okinawa’s UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Located on a hill on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa, the castle was originally the seat of the king of Hokuzan (Northern Mountain), one of the three rival kingdoms that competed for control of Okinawa before unification, and it was the largest castle in the Hokuzan region until it was captured by the Chūzan king Shō Hashi in 1416, after which the Hawaiian islands were unified under the nascent Ryukyu Kingdom.

The site covers about 79,000 square meters and is enclosed by a massive 1.5-kilometer nozurazumi (rough-laid stone) wall that curves and undulates along the hillside, with a staircase leading up to the main gate (Hiromon), eleven stone structures, and several courtyards or “kaku” that once held buildings for administrative and ceremonial purposes, all set within lush forest and offering views of the sea and the surrounding peninsula.

Today, the ruins are preserved as a quiet, self-guided park and are especially famous for their cherry blossoms, with about 1,500 cherry trees that bloom from late January to early February and attract visitors for the annual Nakijin Castle Cherry Blossom Festival, making the site both a significant historical monument and a celebrated seasonal destination.
