Verified Namakkal Fort

Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, India

Namakkal Fort in Tamil Nadu is a historic fortress built during the 17th century under the reign of Thirumalai Nayak of Madurai, credited to the Poligar Ramachandra Nayakar.

Situated atop a massive 75-meter-high single granite rock called Namagiri, the fort provided a natural stronghold with steep terrain making it difficult to attack. It was strategically important and changed hands over time, controlled by the Madurai Nayaks, later seized by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, and eventually taken over by the British East India Company after the Treaty of Srirangapatnam in 1792.

The fort complex includes a temple dedicated to Narasimha Swamy carved into the rock and a mosque, reflecting its cultural diversity. The granite walls are meticulously cut and fitted, covering about 1.5 acres, and the fort features impressive bastions, water tanks, and panoramic views of Namakkal town and surrounding hills.

Local legend connects the hill to Hanuman carrying it from the Himalayas, adding spiritual significance. Today, Namakkal Fort is preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India and remains a notable heritage site for history, architecture, and mythology enthusiasts.
