Nanao Castle Ruins in Nanao, Ishikawa Prefecture, are the remains of a large medieval mountain castle (yamajiro) built during the Muromachi period and expanded by the Noto Hatakeyama clan, forming a huge fortress that stretched about 2.5 km from north to south and 1 km from east to west along a 300‑meter ridge at the northern end of the Ishidō Mountains overlooking Nanao Bay.

The name “Nanao” is said to derive from “seven ridges” (Matsuo, Takeo, Umeo, Kikuo, Kameo, Torao, and Tatsuo), and the castle was used as a major stronghold in the region until the end of the Sengoku period; today, almost all structures are gone, leaving only baileys, stone ramparts, dry moats, and earthen walls spread over the mountain slope, with an on-site museum and an observation deck that offer panoramic views of Nanao Bay and nearby Notojima Island.

The ruins have been protected as a National Historic Site since 1934 and are recognized as one of the five largest medieval mountain castles in Japan, along with Kasugayama, Odani, Kannonji, and Gassantoda castles, making the site a significant example of pre‑Edo castle architecture and strategy rather than a large tourist complex.

Visitors can reach the site by car from JR Nanao Station (about 15 minutes, 7 km) or use the local “Marin‑go” city circular bus that runs a loop around the castle route, and the climb to the main ruin area follows a gentle mountain road with a mix of paved and forested sections, offering a quiet, nature-rich experience of a well-preserved historic landscape.
