Nanded Fort
Maharashtra, India
Nanded Fort, also known as Nandgiri Fort, is located on the banks of the Godavari River about 4.5 km from Nanded city in Maharashtra.
The fort's history dates back to the 10th century and it has been ruled by various dynasties including the Chalukyas, Yadavas, Bahmani Sultanate, Mughals, Marathas, and later the Nizams of Hyderabad. Built from basalt stone, the fort originally had two ramparts and 24 towers, with several still visible today along with water tanks and ruins of old structures.
Nanded Fort played an important strategic role due to its location overlooking the river, which was a vital trade and defense route. It also holds cultural significance as it is near the famous Hazur Sahib Gurudwara, a key pilgrimage site for Sikhs. Today, the fort offers remarkable views of the surrounding landscape and stands as a historical landmark linking the region's rich past and religious heritage.
