Nargund Fort
Nargund, Karnataka, India
Nargund Fort, situated on a hill in Nargund town in Karnataka, was built in 1675 by the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj during his southern expedition.
The fort was designed as a strategic stronghold to delay Mughal annexation and extend Maratha control. Unlike many forts, it lacked ornate palaces, gardens, or temples, focusing instead on essential military features such as water tanks, ammunition storage, a large well, and watchtowers.
The fort changed hands multiple times with Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb capturing it in 1692, the Marathas reclaiming it in 1707, and later control shifting to Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan of Mysore before returning to the Marathas. Nargund Fort also played a role during the 1857 Indian rebellion led by Bhaskar Rao Bhave, who briefly captured surrounding forts before being defeated by the British.
Today, the fort remains in ruins with remnants of ramparts, bastions, and a large lake carved in rock, offering a glimpse into the region's turbulent history.
