National Trust - Chirk Castle
Wales, United Kingdom
Chirk Castle in Wrexham, Wales, is a 13th‑century Marcher fortress built for Edward I on a ridge above the meeting of the Rivers Dee and Ceiriog, and it later became the family home of the Myddelton family for over 400 years.
Now owned and run by the National Trust, it is a Grade I listed castle with a striking contrast between its austere medieval exterior and richly decorated state rooms filled with portraits, antique furniture, and historic collections.
The site includes 5.5 acres of award‑winning gardens, manicured lawns, clipped yews, rose gardens, and a wooded pleasure ground, all set within about 480 acres of parkland that also contain ancient trees, wild ponies, and a preserved section of Offa’s Dyke, making it a popular destination for both history‑lovers and walkers.
