Natural History Museum

London, England, United Kingdom

The Natural History Museum in South Kensington, London, is a world-class science museum and research center housing over 80 million specimens that span 4.5 billion years of Earth’s history. Opened in 1881 in Alfred Waterhouse’s magnificent Victorian Romanesque building, it was formerly part of the British Museum before becoming independent, and today it combines cutting-edge scientific research with popular public exhibits across four color-coded zones. Visitors can marvel at “Hope,” the massive blue whale skeleton suspended from Hintze Hall’s ceiling, explore animatronic dinosaurs including a popular T. rex, view prehistoric fossils, meteorites, and bird specimens, and discover the famous butterfly house and Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. The museum is divided into the Blue Zone (dinosaurs and mammals), Red Zone (prehistoric fossils and human evolution), Green Zone (birds and insects), and Orange Zone (zoological specimens and the Darwin Centre where scientists study the collections). Entry is free year-round from 10 am to 5:50 pm daily, making it one of London’s most visited attractions, and it holds historic collections from Charles Darwin’s voyages and Captain James Cook’s Pacific expeditions.
