Verified Nehaj Fortress

Senj, Croatia

Nehaj Fortress, built in 1558 on a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea in Senj, Croatia, was constructed by Croatian army general Ivan Lenković, captain of the Uskoks, as a defensive stronghold against the Ottoman Empire.

Its name means "no worry," symbolizing the assurance the Uskoks wanted to give the local population that the fortress and the hill would never be conquered. The fortress is square-shaped, measuring about 18 meters high and 23 meters wide, with thick walls ranging from 2 to 3 meters thick, topped by crenellations and five small corner towers. It has eleven large cannon openings and nearly a hundred loopholes for firearms, designed to maximize defense. Inside, there is a courtyard with a cistern that collected rainwater, living quarters for soldiers, an arsenal, and traces of an early Romanesque church dating back to the 11th century.

The fortress served as an observation post, providing panoramic views of the Adriatic coast and nearby islands. Today, Nehaj Fortress houses displays of medieval weapons, costumes, and artifacts related to the Uskoks' legacy and hosts cultural events such as festivals and concerts, making it a symbol of Senj's historic spirit and resilience.
