Oeno Island
Pacific Ocean, United Kingdom
Oeno Island, also called Holiday Island, is an uninhabited coral atoll in the South Pacific Ocean, part of the British Overseas Territory of the Pitcairn Islands. Located 143 km northwest of Pitcairn Island, it spans about 5 km in diameter with a large central lagoon, fringing reef, and low-lying islets covered in pandanus, palm trees, and scrub, rising less than 5 meters above sea level. First sighted in 1819 and named after a whaling ship in 1824, it was annexed by the UK in 1902, serves as a seasonal retreat for Pitcairn residents, and hosts thriving seabird colonies like Murphy’s petrels after a successful 1997 rat eradication. Its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and ecological importance make it a remote natural gem accessible only by boat.
