Olavinlinna Castle, located in Savonlinna, Eastern Finland, was founded in 1475 by Danish-born Swedish knight Erik Axelsson Tott as a strategic fortress to protect the Savonia region from Russian incursions.

Built on a rocky islet at the meeting point of waterways, its design included three round towers and high defensive walls representing advanced military architecture of the late 15th century. Throughout its history, Olavinlinna served as a key defensive stronghold and trading hub, withstanding several sieges and changing ownership between Swedes and Russians several times until it was ceded to Russia in the 18th century.

The castle underwent significant renovations during Russian control, including the addition of bastions and a new bailey. Though it later lost military importance and fell into decline, restoration efforts have preserved it as a cultural and tourist landmark, famous for its medieval architecture and the annual Savonlinna Opera Festival held within its walls.
