Sibbesborg is the site of a medieval castle in Sipoo, southern Finland.
Built mainly of brick and wood in the late 14th century, the fortress originally stood on an island at the mouth of the Sipoo River and served as a defensive stronghold during the medieval period. Over the centuries, land uplift caused by post-glacial rebound connected the former island to the mainland.
Today, only earthworks and remnants of the castle walls remain on a forested hill, but the site still offers insight into Finland’s medieval history. Local legends claim that the castle was built by Vikings or Danish crusaders, although historical and archaeological evidence points to a later medieval origin. Now a freely accessible heritage site, Sibbesborg is valued for both its historical significance and its peaceful natural surroundings.
