Orbetello is a unique town located on a narrow peninsula extending into a lagoon on the Tuscan coast. Originally an Etruscan settlement, it later became a significant Roman colony known as Cosa nearby.

Throughout history, it was ruled by the Aldobrandeschi family, the Sienese Republic, and notably became part of the Spanish State of Presidi in the 16th century, serving as its capital. The town is surrounded by ancient Etruscan walls reinforced in the 16th century, and key landmarks include the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built over an Etruscan-Roman temple with a striking rose window, and the Spanish windmill standing in the lagoon.

Nearby attractions include the Ansedonia archaeological site and the Tagliata Etrusca, a deep cave with mythological significance. Orbetello is linked to the Monte Argentario promontory by an artificial dam and is famous for its natural lagoon, historical architecture, and rich cultural heritage.
