Ōtawara Castle Ruins are the remains of a mid-16th-century Japanese castle in Ōtawara City, southern Tochigi Prefecture, best known for its long association with the Ōtawara clan, who ruled the area as daimyō of Ōtawara Domain for most of the Edo period.

The castle was built around 1545 by Ōtawara Sukekiyo on a 25-meter-high hill overlooking the Sabigawa River, with its main gate facing west toward the Ōshū Kaidō highway that linked Edo with the northern provinces, and it was organized into a series of enclosures (northern kuruwa, main bailey, second and third bailey) that gave it the nickname “Dragon Castle” (Ryū‑jō).

During the Boshin War of 1868, Ōtawara sided with the Imperial forces, and the castle was attacked by pro‑shogunate troops from Aizu Domain; the structures of the third bailey were destroyed in May 1868, and after the Meiji Restoration the remaining buildings were demolished in 1871, leaving only earthworks, ramparts, moat traces, and some stone walls.
