Padmanabhapuram Palace
Thuckalay, Tamil Nadu, India
Padmanabhapuram Palace, located in Thuckalay, Tamil Nadu, is a magnificent 16th-century palace built by the rulers of the Travancore kingdom. Despite being situated in Tamil Nadu, the palace is maintained by the Kerala Government due to historical territorial arrangements.
The palace complex exemplifies traditional Kerala architecture, characterized by intricately carved wooden structures, steeply sloping tiled roofs, and spacious courtyards designed for both functionality and aesthetics. It was constructed around 1601 CE by King Iravi Varma Kulasekhara Perumal and later rebuilt around 1750 by King Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma.
The palace served as the administrative and residential center of the Travancore kings until the capital was moved to Thiruvananthapuram. It consists of several sections including the King's Council Chamber, the Mother's Palace, performance halls, and a four-storied mansion housing the royal family. Among its treasures is a unique wooden bed made from 64 types of medicinal wood, gifted by Dutch traders, and exquisite murals depicting religious and cultural themes.
The palace also features a 300-year-old clock tower, secret passageways, a royal treasury, ancient weapon storage, and a collection of gifts from foreign traders. Today, Padmanabhapuram Palace stands as a well-preserved symbol of royal heritage, offering deep insights into the architectural brilliance and cultural richness of the Travancore era.
