Paignton Zoo Environmental Park in Paignton, Devon, United Kingdom, began in 1923 as a private collection created by Herbert Whitley, an eccentric millionaire and wildlife enthusiast.

Whitley’s vision was to make the zoo a place for learning, conservation, and scientific research, not just recreation. Over the years, it evolved from the Torbay Zoological Gardens into what is now an important environmental park under the management of the Wild Planet Trust. The zoo was one of the pioneers of the modern zoo movement and played a role in founding the British & Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The site spans about 80 acres and is home to more than 2,500 animals representing over 300 species. The zoo underwent major redevelopment starting in 1996, with the addition of themed habitats and modern facilities such as an ape center, reptile tropics, and veterinary center.

It also emphasizes education and conservation, including breeding programs and scientific research projects. Paignton Zoo continues to be a leading institution for wildlife conservation, environmental education, and public engagement in nature.
