Palamu Fort

Palamu Fort in Jharkhand is a historic fortress complex attributed mainly to the Chero dynasty, with parts possibly built by the earlier Raksel dynasty.

There are two forts: an older fort in the plains, which had defenses on three sides and three main gates including the grand "Singh Dwar," and a newer fort located on an adjoining hill built by Raja Medini Rai in 1673. The forts reflect a blend of local tribal, Rajput, and Mughal architectural influences, with notable features such as thick ramparts, vaulted chambers, massive bastions, and intricately designed gates like the Nagpuri gate.

Inside, there were temples dedicated to Hindu deities, some of which were later adapted as mosques during Muslim rule. The forts served as strong military and administrative centers controlling the region, witnessing conflicts during Mughal and British eras. Today, despite partial ruination, Palamu Fort remains a testament to the rich cultural heritage and layered history of Jharkhand.
