Panhala Fort
Maharashtra, India
Panhala Fort in Maharashtra, built between 1178 and 1209 CE by the Shilahara ruler Bhoja II, is one of the largest and most historically significant forts in the Deccan region.
Strategically positioned to oversee important trade routes between the Deccan Plateau and the Konkan coast, it played a central role in various Deccan power struggles involving the Marathas, Mughals, and later the British. The fort's architecture features approximately 7 kilometers of strong fortifications with steep escarpments, multiple bastions, and three elaborate entrance gates, including the famous Teen Darwaza adorned with Persian inscriptions and Ganesh motifs.
Inside, notable structures include the Ambarkhana granaries that once held massive food supplies, the underground Andhar Bavadi well that ensured water during sieges, and the Rajdindi bastion used by Shivaji Maharaj for a daring escape.
The fort witnessed historic events such as the five-month-long siege by Siddhi Johar and the courageous Battle of Pavan Khind, where Baji Prabhu Deshpande sacrificed his life to secure Shivaji's safety. Today, Panhala Fort remains a symbol of Maharashtra's rich martial heritage and architectural ingenuity, attracting historians and trekkers alike.
