Home to around 89,000 residents who primarily rely on agriculture and fishing, it features the settlement of Janhikuda (or Jahnikuda) at its eastern end serving as a gateway to Puri city. With a rich history tied to the Rajas of Bankad who established capitals like Nrusinghgarh at Gurubai after British attacks in the 18th century, the island preserves royal heritage including the current head Raja Santosh Chandra Deo and a historic palace.
