Verified Patta Fort

Shivajinagar, Maharashtra, India

Patta Fort, also known as Vishramgad, is a historic hill fort situated between Nashik and Ahmadnagar in Maharashtra.

Originally built during the Bahmani Sultanate era (1347-1490), it passed through various rulers including the Nizam of Ahmednagar and the Mughals in 1627. The fort was repeatedly contested during the Maratha period; in 1671, Moropant Pingale first captured it for the Marathas, lost it briefly to the Mughals, and reclaimed it again in 1675.

The fort is famous for being a resting place of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in November 1679 after escaping a battle, thanks to the efforts of his spy Bahirji Naik. Patta Fort has several notable structures such as the Ambarkhana (a large hall for visitors), Darukhana (weapons storage), fortifications including bastions and gates like the Trymbak Darwaza, and a temple dedicated to Pattai Devi.

The fort offers scenic trekking routes, and nearby wind turbines mark the modern landscape. It holds a significant place in Maratha history and folklore, representing resilience, strategy, and spiritual sanctuary.
