Verified Penukonda Fort

Penukonda, Andhra Pradesh, India

Penukonda Fort in Andhra Pradesh is a historic hill fort built originally in the 14th century and significantly fortified during the Vijayanagara Empire.

It served as the capital of the empire from 1565 to 1592 after the fall of Hampi, becoming a vital military and administrative center. Known earlier as Ghanagiri, the fort is perched atop a large granite hill and features massive stone walls, seven citadels, and natural fortifications such as surrounding hills and moats.

Notable structures inside include the Gagan Mahal palace, which reflects Vijayanagara architectural style, and Babayya Darga, along with several temples dedicated to deities such as Lord Hanuman and Yoga Narasimha.
