Peros Banhos
British Indian Ocean Territory, United Kingdom
Peros Banhos is a coral atoll in the northern Chagos Archipelago of the British Indian Ocean Territory, featuring around 30 low-lying sandy islets encircling a 20-km-wide lagoon protected by reefs.
Once home to a copra plantation settlement on Île du Coin—the largest island with a historic jetty—it was depopulated in 1971 when Chagossians were evicted for military purposes, though a small group returned in 2026.
Now largely uninhabited and designated a Strict Nature Reserve (especially its eastern section), it supports vital seabird colonies like sooty terns and rich marine life amid restricted access, with limited yacht anchoring permitted outside protected zones.
