Ottoman forces conquered and expanded it in 1471, adding mosques like the 1563 Hadži-Alija Mosque, a hammam, and medresa that shaped its distinctive silhouette amid cobblestone alleys, with the site suffering damage in the 1990s Bosnian War before restoration efforts.
