Stari Grad Velika Kladuša
Velika Kladuša, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Stari Grad Velika Kladuša is a medieval fortress located in Velika Kladuša, Bosnia and Herzegovina, first mentioned in historical records in 1280 during the reign of King Ladislaus IV of Hungary.
It belonged initially to noble families such as the Babonići and later passed through various hands including the Frankopans before being conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1633. The fortress gained strategic importance as a key defensive point for the Ottomans in their expansion toward Croatia, hosting a large garrison and undergoing repairs through the 18th and 19th centuries.
It saw battles during the Austro-Hungarian occupation in 1878 and was the last stronghold of Bosnian resistance in the region until the defenders evacuated due to lack of ammunition. The castle has been refurbished in recent times and remains a prominent symbol of resilience and cultural heritage in Velika Kladuša, also serving as the historic seat of the self-declared Autonomous Province of Western Bosnia during the Bosnian War.
Its well-preserved walls and towers, along with its commanding position overlooking the town and surrounding rivers, make it a notable monument showcasing the layered history of this border region.
