Ponda Fort
Goa, India
Ponda Fort, also known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Fort or Farmagudi Fort, is a historic hilltop fort located near Ponda in Goa, India. Originally constructed by the Adil Shahi Muslim rulers in the 16th century to defend the region against the expanding Portuguese Empire, the fort witnessed significant battles, including successful Maratha capture led by Shivaji Maharaj in 1675.
Although the fort suffered damage during conflicts and fell into disuse during Portuguese rule, it remained strategically important through the Maratha and Portuguese eras. After India's annexation of Goa in 1961, the fort was renovated into a park in 1977, featuring a statue of Shivaji and offering panoramic views of the surroundings.
The fort's architecture reflects early military design using stone and mud, and it now serves as a cultural and tourist site open to the public without entry fees, attracting visitors interested in history and scenic views.
