Prachit Gad
Maharashtra, India
Prachitgad Fort, nestled in the Sahyadri mountain range near Shringarpur in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district, is an ancient hill fort built in 1404 by Rana Jakhuray Surve and rebuilt during the 16th century by Rana Suryarao Surve. It holds historical significance as a Maratha stronghold, captured and repaired by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 1660s.
The fort played a role in battles against British forces in the early 19th century. Spread over about 5 acres, Prachitgad features strong fortifications with an outer wall still intact, while its inner wall has collapsed. The fort includes a temple dedicated to Bhairav Bhawani, a deep well, and remains of old weaponry like five guns.
Trekking to the fort offers scenic views of the surrounding forests, hills, and the nearby Chandoli National Park. Prachitgad is appreciated by history enthusiasts and trekkers seeking an adventurous and culturally rich experience in Maharashtra’s Western Ghats.
