Pratapgad Fort

Pratapgad Fort, located near Mahabaleshwar in Satara district, Maharashtra, was built in 1656 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to guard the Par pass and control the surrounding region.
It is famous for the Battle of Pratapgad in 1659 where Shivaji Maharaj defeated Afzal Khan, a general of the Adil Shahi dynasty, marking a pivotal moment in Maratha history. The fort is split into an upper and lower part, with sturdy bastions, multiple gates, a Mahadev temple in the upper fort, and the Bhavani temple in the lower fort, which held spiritual significance for Shivaji.
The fort’s architecture reflects military engineering with thick walls, bastions, and hidden escape routes. A bronze statue of Shivaji Maharaj stands near the fort, commemorating his valor. Today, Pratapgad is a well-preserved historical site and popular tourist attraction offering scenic views of the Western Ghats and Maratha legacy.
