Queen Maud Bay
UK, United Kingdom
Queen Maud Bay is a V-shaped bay about 2.5 miles wide on the south coast of South Georgia island in the South Atlantic, immediately north of Nunez Peninsula.
Roughly charted in 1819 by a Russian expedition under Bellingshausen, it was named before 1922 for Queen Maud, wife of Norway's King Haakon VII, likely by Norwegian whalers who frequented the area. Remote and rugged, it contributes to South Georgia's wild Antarctic-like landscape with no permanent habitation, primarily of interest to explorers and expedition cruises.
