Raibania Fort
Raibania, Odisha, India
Raibania Fort in Odisha, India, is considered the largest medieval fort complex in eastern India, built during the reign of King Narasingha Deva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty between 1238 and 1264 AD.
This massive fortress was strategically located near the Subarnarekha River, surrounded by natural barriers like dense bamboo forests and moats, forming a strong defense line against invasions from the Delhi Sultanate, Mughals, Afghans, and Marathas. The fort served as a vital military training ground and a safeguard for the Udra state.
Architecturally, it features a distinctive pyramid-like structure made of laterite blocks with three consecutive massive fortification walls separated by moats. The fort complex also includes 161 fort goddesses representing the protective deities of the region.
Despite its historical and architectural significance, much of the fort is now in ruins, with parts repurposed by local inhabitants. Raibania Fort remains a symbol of Odisha's rich heritage and its medieval military prowess.
