Raichur Fort
Raichur, Karnataka, India
Raichur Fort, located in the heart of Raichur city in Karnataka, India, is a historically significant fortress with origins dating back to 1294 CE during the rule of the Kakatiya dynasty, constructed under the orders of Queen Rudramma Devi’s minister.
The fort has changed hands multiple times throughout history, being ruled by the Bahmani Sultanate, Vijayanagara Empire, Adil Shahis, and Mughals, each leaving behind architectural and cultural imprints.
Strategically positioned on a hill about 88 meters high, the fort features massive stone walls built without binding material, double circuit walls on three sides, and grand entrance gates like the Fateh Darwaza and Adil Shahi Gate adorned with intricate carvings and inscriptions in multiple languages including Kannada, Telugu, Persian, and Arabic.
Inside the fort are remnants of the Raja Mahal, a palace from the Vijayanagara period, and the Jamia Masjid, reflecting Indo-Islamic architectural fusion, along with ancient water tanks and watchtowers equipped with cannons for defense.
The fort gained prominence during the Battle of Raichur in 1520 when Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire successfully recaptured it from the Sultanate of Bijapur, marking a decisive victory in Deccan history.
Despite its current dilapidated state, the fort remains a major tourist attraction, offering insights into centuries of regional conflict, governance, and architectural evolution in North Karnataka.
