Verified Raigad

Maharashtra, India

Raigad Fort, located in the Sahyadri mountain range near Mahad in Maharashtra, served as the capital of the Maratha Empire from 1674 to 1818 under the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Perched at about 1,356 meters above sea level, the fort commands breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and is considered one of India's most strategically significant and well-preserved hill forts. Its architecture blends Hindu and Muslim styles, featuring massive fortifications, bastions, multiple gates including the grand Maha Darwaja, and a three-storied royal palace with chambers and private restrooms.

The fort complex houses the Jagdishwar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, water reservoirs, granaries, and historic sites such as the execution point called Takmak Tok. Raigad Fort was the site of Shivaji’s coronation in 1674, marking the formal establishment of the Maratha kingdom. Visitors can reach the fort via a long climb of 1,737 steps or choose a ropeway for easier access.

The fort stands today as a powerful symbol of Maratha pride, architectural brilliance, and enduring legacy in Indian history.
