It was originally ruled by Hindu chieftains, later taken over by the Sultans of Mandu, and then captured by Sher Shah Suri in 1543 after a prolonged siege. During the Mughal era, the fort served as the headquarters of a Sarkar in Ujjain Subah.
The fort complex houses the shrine of Hazrat Peer Fatehullah Shah Baba, attracting devotees annually and symbolizing communal harmony. Today, Raisen Fort stands as a testament to medieval Indian hilltop military architecture and regional history, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
