Rajgad Fort, located near Male in Maharashtra, India, was the first capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and served as his stronghold for about 26 years.

The fort is situated on a hill rising 1,376 meters above sea level and spans a vast area, roughly 40 kilometers in base diameter, making it strategically difficult to besiege. It is divided into key sections such as Padmavati Machi, Sanjivani Machi, and Suvela Machi, each designed with layered fortifications and defensive structures that showcase advanced military architecture.

The fort houses palaces, temples, water reservoirs, and granaries, and its notable architectural features include massive stone walls, hidden entry points, bastions, and natural defenses like deep gorges. Rajgad played a significant role in Maratha history with many important events taking place there, such as the birth of Shivaji’s son Rajaram and the safekeeping of treasure looted from Surat.
