Ramnagar Fort, located on the eastern bank of the Ganges River near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, was built in 1750 by Maharaja Balwant Singh, the Kashi Naresh or king of Varanasi.

This fort-palace is constructed from creamy yellow Chunar sandstone and blends Mughal and Indian architectural styles, featuring carved balconies, open courtyards, pavilions, and two prominent white towers. It served as the royal residence and court for the kings of Benares and also housed temples, including the Veda Vyasa Temple and a south-facing Hanuman temple.

The fort’s strategic location on high ground protects it from flooding while its design reflects military readiness and cultural influence. Today, it contains a museum with royal artifacts, such as vintage cars, weaponry, and historical exhibits, and remains partly a residence of the current royal family while also being a major tourist attraction known for its architectural grandeur and annual cultural events like the Ramnagar Ramlila.
