It is believed that Lord Rama visited this area during his 14 years of exile, which is why the town was originally called Ram Pavdali, now Rampayli.
The town is famous for the Shri Ram Balaji Temple, built about 600 years ago by the Maratha Bhonsle family, designed like a fort on the riverbank with special features allowing the first rays of sunlight to touch the feet of Lord Rama. The temple's main idols are Shri Ram Balaji and Sita, depicted in forest attire, with the temple being a site of deep faith and an annual fair attracting many devotees.
