Ramshej Fort, situated about 14 kilometers northwest of Nashik in Maharashtra, stands approximately 3,273 feet above sea level and is historically significant for its resistance against the Mughal army led by Aurangzeb.

The fort's name means "Lord Ram's bedstead," reflecting the belief that Lord Rama stayed here during his exile. In the late 17th century, the fort was defended fiercely by Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his small force of about 600 warriors against a vastly larger Mughal army of 40,000 soldiers and artillery.

Despite lacking cannons, the Marathas used ingenuity such as wooden cannons and animal skins to hold off the siege for six years, showcasing extraordinary resilience and strategic defense. The fort features rock-cut water cisterns, temples including a Lord Ram temple inside a large cave, and water tanks, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges.

Though many battles were fought, it was finally surrendered to the British in 1818. Ramshej Fort remains a popular trekking destination, celebrated for its historical importance and scenic beauty.
