Ranthambore Fort
Rajasthan, India
Ranthambore Fort, located within Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, was founded in the mid-10th century by Rajput King Sapaldaksha of the Chauhan dynasty. This hill fort stands about 700 feet high and was known for its strategic design, making it nearly impregnable.
The fort features a blend of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, with massive stone walls, thick ramparts, and seven grand gates including Navlakha Pol, Hathi Pol, and Ganesh Pol. It houses several important structures such as temples, palaces, and water reservoirs, including the famous Trinetra Ganesh Temple where Lord Ganesha is depicted with a third eye. Over centuries, it witnessed many battles and changed hands multiple times between Rajputs, Delhi Sultanate rulers like Alauddin Khilji, and Mughal emperors such as Akbar.
The fort is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site for being an outstanding example of Rajput military architecture and is admired for panoramic views of the surrounding national park, which is home to diverse wildlife including tigers.
