Rasalgad
Maharashtra, India
Rasalgad Fort in Maharashtra is a historic hill fort situated on a triangular plateau roughly five acres in size, located about 15 km east of Khed city in the Ratnagiri district.
The fort is known for its well-preserved fortifications including two main gates, with a Veer Maruti idol near the first gate and a Zolayidevi temple featuring a stone Deepmala and Tulsi Vrindavan within the fort area. It has 16 cannons and rock-cut water cisterns which highlight its defensive features.
Historically, Rasalgad was under the control of the Morè clan before being captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and later surrendered to British forces in 1818. The fort offers views of the surrounding Mahipatgad and Chakdev forts and reflects a blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles, emphasizing both strategic military construction and cultural elements.
It remains a popular trekking and heritage site, showcasing Maharashtra's Maratha era legacy.
