Ratangad
Maharashtra, India
Ratangad Fort, located near Ratanwadi village in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, is an ancient fort that stands around 1,297 meters above sea level in the Sahyadri mountain range. Often called the "Jewel of the Sahyadris," it dates back over 400 years, originally built during the Bahmani Sultanate period and later captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj due to its strategic importance.
The fort is best known for the natural rock formation called "Nedhe" or "Eye of the Needle," a large, wind-eroded cavity about 10 feet high and 60 feet wide, which may have served as a watchtower. Ratangad has four main gates named Ganesh, Hanuman, Konkan, and Trimbak, adorned with sculptures of deities.
The fort houses numerous rock-cut water cisterns, some of which hold potable water year-round, and is the origin of the Pravara River. The nearby ancient Amruteshwar Temple, dating back to the Hemadpanti era, is famous for its intricate carvings. With panoramic views of surrounding forts like Alang, Madan, Kulang, and Kalsubai, Ratangad is a favored destination for trekkers and history enthusiasts, especially during the cool months from October to February when nature is lush.
