Verified Rayadurgam

Andhra Pradesh, India

Rayadurgam, also known as Rayadurg Fort, is a medieval fortress located in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, India.

Built at an altitude of 2,727 feet by Junga Nayaka, a chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire, it played a crucial role in the empire's defense. The fort features multiple layers of inner forts, making it difficult for invading enemies to penetrate. It was strategically important during battles, including the conflict of Talikota where forces from the Vijayanagara Empire fought the Deccan Sultanates.

The fort later came under the control of Tipu Sultan, who annexed it to his Gooty province. Despite some parts of the fort being in ruins, much of it remains intact, including stone-carved doors, four caves, and temples such as those dedicated to Hanuman, Narasimha Swamy, and others.

A notable feature inside the fort is a large monolithic statue of Dashabhuja Ganapathi (Lord Ganesha with ten arms), reflecting exquisite ancient sculptural art. The fort’s historical significance and scenic hilltop location make it a prominent tourist attraction today.
