Verified Reis Magos Fort

Verem, Goa, India

Reis Magos Fort, located in Verem, Goa, India, was originally built in 1551 by the Portuguese over a prior Adil Shahi military outpost.

It served as a key defensive structure guarding the narrowest point of the Mandovi River and the maritime approach to the then-capital, Velha Goa. The fort is a prime example of Portuguese colonial military architecture, featuring red laterite stone walls, high ramparts, cylindrical watchtowers, a moat, and a drawbridge.

It was equipped with 33 cannons of various sizes to repel attacks from Maratha and Adil Shahi forces and served multiple roles including residence for Portuguese viceroys, military fortress, hospital, and prison. The fort houses a chapel dedicated to the Three Wise Men, symbolizing the Portuguese religious influence in Goa.

After falling into disuse, it was restored starting in 2012 and now functions as a cultural center and tourist attraction, showcasing Portuguese defensive ingenuity blended with local materials and tradition, standing as a testament to Goa’s layered history.
